The English Department at White Oak High School
works to provide consistency among the classes so that students and parents will
be aware of academic expectations. In English I, II, III, and IV, students will
experience
- · Writing portfolios and state-designed rubrics;
- · MLA formatting for research in all classes;
- · Projects to prepare students for the GRAD Project in twelfth grade;
- · SAT-preparation vocabulary and practice with test-taking skills;
- · Public-speaking opportunities;
- · Literature of various genres and times; and
- · Assessments conducted in various ways: projects, tests, essays, seminars.
In addition, students will experience
- · Consistent enforcement of school rules and discipline procedures and
- · Accountability for attendance and participation.

COURSEWORK
This study of world literature will expose
students to a variety of texts from different countries. Students will:
- · Examine this literature for meaning;
- · Demonstrate understanding by responding to writing and discussion prompts, writing essays, and completing creative projects. These projects will allow students to apply their interpretations of texts. Finally,
- · Students will complete at least one independent reading project.
